24 Apr Hope Builds with MAGIC
During our recent spring break, seventh graders, Nakiyah Andrews and Zayanna Gunter, participated in MAGIC Camp – Mentoring a Girl in Construction, sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC).
Nakiyah and Zayanna received hands-on construction training in brick-laying, dry-wall finishing, glass cutting, tiling and glazing. They also learned about pipe fitting.
According to Zayanna, her favorite part of the camp was learning about brick laying and tile fitting. Nakiyah really liked the dry-wall finishing process. Both girls were impressed by their visit to the 33rd floor of a high-rise building under construction.
The weeklong camp ended at Drexel University where the students received their certificates of completion. This was Hope’s first time sending students to participate in the MAGIC camp but the rave reviews from both Nakiyah and Zayanna will ensure that more students will attend next year!
MAGIC is a free, one-week camp that provides young girls with the opportunity to learn about the countless avenues of employment available to women in the construction industry. The benefits of the camp are two-fold. Young women gain marketable skills while learning to successfully perform difficult tasks. This builds self-confidence and boosts self-image.
